Five Steps to Dressing Your Resume Naked With the Perfect Cover Letter
Did you wear clothes to your last interview? Stupid question, right? As unthinkable as it would be like to get naked for an interview, you are essentially committing the same faux pas, if you send your resume to a potential employer, unaccompanied by a well-written cover letter.
Three truths about uncontested Cover Letters
Whether we are talking about a cover letter or interview your best suit, wear now three undeniable truths.
First, as a goodInterview suit, a cover letter is essential. At some point in your life, your career began before, a smart person you recommended to buy a business suit quality. And you just know that somewhere in your closet is the black, blue, navy or gray suit, have you registered for your interviews. No employer should be a rational candidate say that is professional dress expected for the interview. Even in creative industries, it is understandable that the candidate should have aBusiness suit, although more room for color and style choices than in traditionally conservative areas given. Although the announcement may not explain explicitly that a letter is preferred, it is always a good practice to one if for no other reason than to show how effectively you can communicate your ideas and thoughts arewriting.
Second, a cover letter complements your resume. COVER is an acronym for a five-step-paragraph-by-paragraph approach you use to write an effective cover letter can. In the next few pages I'll show you how to cover the formula and the announcement for the position for which you are as a practical guide to applying the perfect addition to your CV can use craft.
To illustrate how this works, we take a real job announcement that was posted recently on a popular onlineConstruction site. The entry was for a Human Resources Assistant position at an Atlanta consulting firm that, for the purposes of this article, we will refer as ABC Consulting. Suppose that you have read the job announcement and would like to apply for the job. Your resume is ready. Now we write the letter!
Step One: Maintain a connection in the first paragraph. The formula is C in the COVER to connect. Step one in creating the perfect cover letter is to establisha connection in the first paragraph. If you are someone to be introduced, run to get into a conversation, know the person better and discover what you both have in common. The same principle applies when fitting an authentic connection with a potential employer.
To connect with an employer, you must do, what I call intelligence. Intelligence conducted based on three different levels: (1) of the company or organization would work on you, (2)specific department or area where you would work, and (3) the person (s) would work for you. Doing your homework on a potential employer has a twofold purpose. First, you train to help a company to assess whether the company the contract, values, culture, and are compatible with your own goals and working methods. Second, if you choose, there is a good fit, the person reading your cover letter in or sitting across the desk from you during the interviewimpressed that you took the Initiatve to investigate the company you want to work for you to be. If you have a bright person who tries to be in the HR field work in a great entry level position and would like to work in a fast-paced environment, this could be the experience for you! "

After you have completed your research and put together to give some thoughts on how to incorporate an aspect of what youlearned in the first paragraph of your cover letter in order to cultivate a connection.
Suppose, for example, that your research indicated that ABC Consulting helped employees build Habitat for Humanity house last month. If you are a regular volunteer with Habitat for Humanity, you can declare a connection with the company through your personal commitment to work with Habitat on earlier projects and with the expression of the enthusiasm with which you are to work with the company viewon his future projects.

The extension will make a connection over all at the beginning of a relationship. People want other people they like and with whom they share similar interests and values to work. It follows that if youis an authentic connection to cultivate in your cover letter and you have the required qualifications the employer is looking for, there being a much greater probability, in which you are called for interview.
Second step: Provide a brief overview of who you are in the second paragraph. The O in the formula stands for COVER data. While your resume is a great insight into what you have done, it is equally important to describe to devote a few sentences in your cover letter, who you are. Idealthe connection that you made in the first paragraph was enough to encourage the person reading your letter to read more. Now you must use the moment to raise this link in your second paragraph.
One way to do this is to work out your personal brand statement if you include one in your resume. In my article entitled, it is time to consider your resume's MO?, I wrote about the importance of including a strong brand statement in your resume. An effective statement labelweave your strengths into tangible benefits you can offer a potential employer. You can explain the overview on your cover letter to a specific aspect of the message of your brand in more depth. Another option is to explain why you are a particular career path pursued. Perhaps you are passionate about promoting green issues, sits down for children with special needs, or writing advertising copy. Infuse the enthusiasm you have for continuing your professional passion in your coverLetter to a potential employer to show that same level of commitment, will bring to the position.
Step Three: VOICE your interest in the position in the second paragraph. V The formula is in the COVER to vote. In the first two or three sentences of the second paragraph, you said that the person reading your cover letter, remember who you are. In the next few sentences, you want a link to help you with, why are you interested in the position. Think about what promptedThey respond to the job announcement or to explain how you feel when you learned about the job. Integrate some of the intelligence you performed in step one, two or three good reasons why you are for this particular employer list.
Return to the ABC Consulting Job announcement, here is an example of how our cover letter looks like so far, including the second paragraph:
"Please accept this letter and resume in enclosed application for the Human ResourcesAssistant position with your company. I had the opportunity to visit your official website. I understand from reading the newsletter in December 2009 that the Department of Human Resources plans in their current software system transition to the PeopleSoft system in March. In my previous position, that I helped train 10 people in my department, how to use PeopleSoft.
Until five years ago, I ran a small Internet-based business from my home. A chance encounter at a friend's dinner party changedMy way forever. It was there where a mutual friend introduced me to Jane Doe, the then Chairman of the Board of the Society for Human Resource Management - Atlanta. Our conversation ignited long-standing desire in the human resources of the field work. I was excited to learn this opening with ABC Consulting because of the ongoing cooperation with local charitable organizations including the Atlanta Community Food Bank, where I have been a volunteer for the past ten years. I was also impressed to readon your corporate blog that ABC Consulting was named one of the best places to work in Atlanta for the third consecutive year. "
Fourth step: Add specific examples from your experience and skills in the third and fourth paragraph. The E is in the formula for COVER examples. In the previous two, you connect with your potential employer cultivates and why you wanted to work for the company. In the next two paragraphs, you need to make yourSelling point, explains the practical value you can offer the employer. The instructions in the job announcement are the blueprint for your purchase. Most jobs contain a description of the status of tasks, essential functions, required and preferred education, experience, skills and abilities, or any combination of these. This is where we'll begin.
To understand how your sales approach, we return to our hypothetical Human Resources Assistant Positionat ABC Consulting. The expanded mission statement appears below:
"HR Assistant a wide range of personnel duties as required under the procedure set forth by the Human Resource Department. Assists in the hiring and firing process, the company in recruiting and orientation programs. Compiles, holding and managing all aspects of the company's personnel files. Board reports on disability and the date and reason for termination. Compiles various HR reports. Oversees HRRecognition programs, files, employment records, files, looking for employees and provides information to authorized persons, as required. Oversees payroll function to the salary guidelines, acts as a link between the HR department adhesive, its managers and PEO as necessary. "
In addition, the notice listed 19 major functions. I have the first five listed below:
1st Conduct New Hire Orientation explain; company personnel policies, benefits and procedures to employees or jobapplicants.2. Regularly check the files of federal employee and compliance requirements on behalf of the company to respond. Responds to management and government investigations providing information for personnel decisions. 3rd Answer the questions regarding examinations, eligibility, salaries, benefits and other important information. 4th Process, verify and maintain records of staff activities such as staffing, recruitment, training, unemployment claims and appeals for outside work withProviders through the provision of current information. Maintenance costs of the company's job descriptions, assists in comp studies as requested. Maintain performance evaluations and classifications. 5th Gather personnel from other departments or staff.
Job duties and functions listed in the rule in order of importance. efforts when applying for a position, the first three tasks and functions in your cover letter address. If your expertise is not with the top three, the list increasing chronologicalto identify three. With the help of key words and phrases in the job announcement, quantifiable and concrete examples of your work experience. For example, in applying for the Human Resources Assistant position, you could in this paragraph, your experience in the implementation of new employee orientation map, the maintenance personnel and HR staff to answer the questions. Here is an example of how the third paragraph could be in your cover letter to ABC Consulting:
"In mycurrent role at XYZ Company, I am closely involved in every phase of our employee lifecycle. I assist in the process of recruiting, career fairs offer a co-ordinated the creation of vacancies, screening CVs, letters and preparation. I lead a two-day orientation and on-boarding program for new employees with company benefits, policies to familiarize and procedures. I also maintain accurate payroll and personnel records for the 125 employees in our office. During a typical day, IInterface with employees, all levels of management and external agencies, as authorized to provide the staff with questions and information requested. "
The ABC Consulting Job announcement, many skills and attributes listed preferred candidate should possess. This active listening, speaking, time management, critical thinking, writing, and includes knowledge of Microsoft Office products and HRIS software. In paragraph four your letter you describe particularCases used if you have two or three of these preferred skills. More importantly, you should be able to articulate how to use these skills to make a valuable contribution to your potential employer. Here is an example of how the fourth paragraph in your cover letter might read:
"If an offer extended to enter at your company, I am ready to make an immediate contribution in three ways. First, I have to the PeopleSoft software program for two years in operation and have a high degreePerformance tests. As ABC Consulting is the transition to this software in March, I can assist in training your staff on the system. Secondly, because I'm probably in an address to any size group, I will be able to represent your company effectively in off-site recruiting events and to convey concise information during new hire orientation. Last my current position involves working on several projects and generate reports to strict deadlines time. These tasks haveenabled me to raise the kind of time management and prioritization skills, which will be an asset to your company. "
Step Five: Ask for an interview in the fifth paragraph. The R in the formula stands for COVER request. In the preceding paragraphs, you have your sales through concrete examples from your professional experience and skills. The last paragraph of your letter, it is time to close the sale by requesting an interview. First, you want to statehow and when to follow up with the person you write to arrange an interview. Second, you give your own contact information in case the recipient is of your resume and cover letter, he or she wants to impress, you call first invited to an interview. Last, by all means, you should thank the person reading your cover letter for his / her time and consideration. Here is an example of how the last paragraph could be in your cover letter to ABC Consulting:

Use the formula COVER explained in this article as a guide for a cover letter that will best reflect your personality, qualifications design, and the desire to interview for the job you land. The time you invest to get a potential employer, research and craft a carefully worded letter, you apart from your competition and dividends in the long run, if your phone is ringing off the hook with interview opportunities!
